I think Holmes biggest fascination with Irene Adler was he was trying to solve a mystery. This woman was smart she outwitted two men right up under there own noses and they were so sure they knew her daily schedule they didn’t even see it. I think sherlock was also compelled by her beauty and he may wanted her for himself. As she was labeled THE WOMAN. She even bid him a goodnight in the street, he knew the voice was familiar but thought it was a young lad. He must have felt like a fool to later find out he was outwitted by a woman and then she flew away to England with her husband that they didn’t know she had, to never return again. Then she left a note behind for all three men to read. I think sherlock was in love the only keepsake he wanted was her photograph.
